Be Unreasonable and Make MORE Money
A friend of mine made a bet with someone to do an unreasonable act.
She boldly walked into Starbucks and point blank asked the server for a free cup of coffee. They said “no”. The word “no” has so much baggage from when we were kids because parents use it so haphazardly! When we hear “no” we hear you are “bad” or “you messed up”. When we make a request, even if we don’t hear no, there is also a voice of judgement. If I ask the servers at Starbucks for a free cup of coffee, they are going to think I am unethical or presumptuous.
Still, a light bulb went off in my mind at how simple it is to make an unreasonable request and what it could mean to a person’s bottom line.
YOU JUST ASK! THE ANSWER MAY BE “YES”
The truth is, you are just asking for a cup of coffee! And if you asked a different server, they may have actually given you one. You may think you know the answer in advance of making an unreasonable request, but you don’t know what people are going to think of you.
Anytime you don’t ask, one thing is for sure. You don’t get.
You are missing a lot of connection, a chance to move your business forward, and MORE money on the table. The cost is high for not putting yourself out there.
So… do you think it’s worth it?
YOU MAY HAVE TO HEAR NO A FEW HUNDRED TIMES BEFORE YOU HEAR A “YES”
Most of you know the story of Colonel Sanders. At 65 years old he went across the country in search of someone who would pay him for his fried chicken recipe and he failed 1,009 times! If he had not been willing to continue making the request, he would not have made millions and created a legacy of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
He isn’t the only one. In 1995, J.K. Rowling wrote a synopsis of the “Harry Potter” book to send to publishers and it was rejected 12 times. Today, J.K. Rowling is a billionaire.
Every year, so many entrepreneurs go back to predictable paychecks and give up on their dreams. They were afraid to keep hearing “no” while they were waiting for a “yes”. We know that success isn’t made over night and that chances and requests need to be made, but too many people just resist asking for what they want.
The way to get past this and to speed up the “yes” process is to make MORE unreasonable requests.
YOUR INCOME GOES UP WHEN YOU ASK
Inevitably, when clients begin to work with me they aren’t sure why they are working all the time. They never seem to have money for travel or for retirement savings. These clients are seasoned professionals working high profile jobs. But when I suggest they charge more for their work, the typical response I get is, “Really?”
After a bit of tough love, they begin to raise their prices. Which often feels very unreasonable to them. But then their clients pay the requested rate and just like that, their income raises from 20-50% overnight.
THINK OF THE MOST OUTRAGEOUS REQUEST AND MAKE IT!
There is no great reward without some element of vulnerability. You have to stand in the belief that your business is worthwhile and that your product or service will have a tremendous impact in people’s lives. There will be some people who will think you are annoying, pushy, outrageous, and rude! At the end of the day, who cares?
“No risk, no reward” never rang MORE true.
This is the price of not putting yourself out there. Getting no results. In case you’re not that good at math, that equals zero in the money column.
I recently attended a conference where a woman stood up and said, “I almost didn’t come to this conference, but then I got another e-mail and I thought that I needed to attend. This event has changed my life.” If the conference leader had not been promoting the event aggressively with a bunch of e-mails, that woman would not have come. The annoying requests may have irritated five people, but it may have also changed another five people’s lives.
TAKE ON THE UNREASONABLE CHALLENGE TODAY
I challenge you to hear a no and say “No problem, thank you. Next!”
I wonder what the most outrageous request you could ask would be? Can you find ten requests? At the end of the day, if you follow Colonel Sander’s tenacity, you will end up coming out on top.
If you create a legacy out of your passion and put millions in the bank as a result, wouldn’t it be worth it?
