What Does Your Family Tree Have to Do with Your Money Tree?
Many people have asked me over the years how I was able to manage money. If you gave me $10, $10,000.00 or $100,000.00, I always had enough to live a comfortable lifestyle and have money for savings.
I never gave any credit for this to my parents.
I grew up poor and my dad could not save a dime to save his life. My mom worked hard and managed to buy a property once she got a small inheritance from my grandfather. But I never personally made much money when I was growing up. Neither of them went to college and both were immigrants who suffered challenging circumstances as young children.
I spent the first 35 years of my life being angry at how I was raised. I was sad I had no role models to look up to and surrendered to being a complete victim of my circumstances. While I had made money and was a successful business woman, I thought there was a ceiling of how much money I could have. I thought being a millionaire was for other people. Even while my portfolio was growing, I could not appreciate it because I just thought it was a stroke of luck.
It wasn’t until the past ten years that I changed my point of view. This new thought process changed my life.
YOU CAN ONLY BECOME TRULY ABUNDANT WHEN YOU EMBRACE EVERY ASPECT FOR WHAT IT IS
I started to see that while my dad made no money, he was a very strong man. He survived the Holocaust and taught me never to give up. This is a quality that I used to learn how to manage drawing more money into my life and managing it over the years. Many of the choices I made as I became a woman, got married, and started a family, were based on what I did not want for my life. If I had not experienced being poor, I may not have been as motivated not to be poor as an adult. My desperate state had me focused with full intention to make a life for myself where I could travel, provide for my kids, and not have to worry about money.
When I was young, I simply felt helpless for having no money. I believed that I would always feel this way.
Once I started to see the big picture of who my father was and his circumstances, it opened me up to who I was and the truth of my journey. He did not have an opportunity to make money, but I did. The “survivor” energy he passed on to me, fueled me to make more.
I no longer saw myself as a victim.
WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH YOUR MONEY TREE?
The way we perceive our childhood and relationship to our family has a lot to do with how we see money today. The way we have come to understand what we are capable of and what we deserve is closely tied into this understanding about ourselves.
Breaking the patterns is challenging and is the reason a lot many people don’t have money.
Yes, I said it.
Some people do have a lack of education or circumstances to create their own opportunities. However, at least 70% of us can make our lives what we want it to be and have the amount of money we want.
Most of us have a pretty good idea that it is possible to have a mastery over money.
You only stay stuck because you are holding on to past ideas and not seeing “misfortunes” as “strengths.”
HOW YOU CAN TURN YOUR MONEY STORY AROUND
Take a moment to look at all of the reasons you don’t manage your money well. Why don’t trust yourself to make business deals? Why don’t you have MORE? If you are afraid to ask for money, what strength can you use from a part of your childhood that made you worry about rejection or someone saying “no” to you? What can you take from that situation and see it as a positive attribute that can take you forward? Once you let go of the way you are holding yourself back, you will need to get used to a new way of being.
You are no longer going to be able to blame other people or money for the reason you don’t have what you want.
You will need to take action and know that you can handle the situation. You will realize that you deserve all the money you want and figure out what it will take to get it.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM STILL NOT MAKING MORE MONEY?
If you don’t seem to be making any progress, it is because you have not let go.
You can use an effective technique to move you past these blocks.
Close your eyes and see the two parts of yourself at odds. One is the part that insists you can’t make more money. The other part sees you as strong and capable. The first part is living in a sadness about the past and what was not possible for you as a child. Possibly even what you were not able to get from your parents.
You need to go back and turn this conversation around. You may need to have these parts talk to each other everyday to keep yourself moving through these damaging thoughts.
For me, I took growing up poor to be the vehicle that made me dead-set to grow up with money. It also drove me to start my company as a monetizing mentor to empower other women entrepreneurs to have MORE.
I now appreciate that I was poor.
If I was not ever poor, I would not be as grateful to have money today.
Look at your two parts now.
What are they saying to each other and how can they work together? How can you love all the chapters of your life as stepping stones for you to grow and move forward?
WHAT YOU LOOK AT AS YOUR EXCUSES WILL BECOME YOUR STRENGTHS TO MAKE YOU MORE MONEY
Your ability to accept and love what is, will release you to start living the life you want with the amount of money you desire. Holding back will leave you with more of the same.
